Stable Isotope Analysis of Fossil Bone
نویسندگان
چکیده
The biological signal hidden in stable carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and strontium stable isotope ratios in archaeological and fossil skeletal finds give clues to a variety of palaeoecological parameters. In contrast to trace element analysis, these parameters can be assessed on the individual level, which is a major advantage for palaeoanthropology, where single finds prevail over multiple finds at the site of recovery. In this paper, we first review the potential of isotopic analysis of light elements (C, N, O) for the reconstruction of ecological niches of extinct species, followed by a more recent example on how stable strontium isotope ratios can give clues to residence change, migration events and home range assessment in the past. Since modern techniques permit the establishment of valid data even from very small sample sizes, the application of such invasive methods even for valuable fossil finds should be encouraged.

Detection of bone preservation in archaeological and fossil samples
-Several methods for assessing the preservation of the organic and inorganic components of bone are discussed. Aspects of bone composition (i.e. specific trace element concentrations and stable isotope ratios) provide information on diet and health status in prehistoric and fossil humans. Such information is valuable in understanding the evolution of human adaptation but, prior to the analysis ...
متن کاملOxygen Isotopes in Enamel Carbonate and their Ecological Significance
Stable carbon isotope analysis of fossil tooth enamel carbonate, and oxygen isotope analysis of bone or enamel phosphate, are established tools for palaeodietary and palaeoclimatic reconstruction, respectively. C/C ratios provide evidence of an animal’s diet and phosphate-based O/O values are used to establish palaeotemperature proxies. Recent studies of fossil enamel suggest that biogenic O/O ...

The emphasis on tooth enamel for extraction of stable light isotope signals from the mineral phase of archaeological and paleontological calcified tissues is based on the widespread understanding that enamel remains a relatively closed system, while bone does not. Twenty years ago, however, Sullivan and Krueger s groundbreaking study demonstrating the potential of stable carbon isotopes from th...

The application of stable isotope analysis (SIA) has become a standard scientific approach in Agricultural and Ecological researches and, more in general, in several disciplines such as biology, botany, zoology, organic chemistry, climatology, and nutrition. The main objectives of this paper are (1) to provide a simple definition of stable isotopes and (2) to illustrate analytical measurement m...
متن کاملTrace element analyses indicative of paleodiets in Middle Miocene mammals from the Somosaguas site (Madrid, Spain)
Trace element analysis of fossil bone and enamel constitutes a useful tool to characterize the paleoecological behavior of mammals. Up to now, most trace element studies have focused on Plio-Pleistocene fossils. Here, we show that paleodietary inferences based on trace element analyses can be also obtained from ~14Ma old Miocene mammals, in a period of time when important paleoclimatic changes ...
